New Barts Documentary Series

Posted: February 16th, 2026

TV channel 5 has announced that their new six-part documentary about St Bartholomew’s Hospital, entitled ‘Alice Roberts: Our Hospital Through Time’, will be broadcast from this Wednesday (February 18th) at 8pm and on the subsequent five Wednesdays.

Professor Alice Roberts, originally a medical doctor before she “branched off into anthropology and history”, takes viewers behind the scenes at Barts to explore the hospital from its foundation in 1123 through to its present-day state-of-the-art cancer and cardiac care by talking to staff and volunteers, and utilising the famous Barts Archive.

Alice (pictured in the Barts Pathology Museum) says that she’s “very excited indeed to be embarking on this new series, in which I’ll be delving into how medicine and health has changed over the centuries, and how scientific discoveries have translated into real, tangible improvements in health. Barts is one of the oldest hospitals in the world and provides an excellent backdrop for exploring this fascinating history, to bring that story right up to the current moment and even peer into the future at medical advances just around the corner.”

Barts Chief Executive, Professor Charles Knight OBE, believes the series is “a wonderful opportunity for more people to discover the real Barts, where nine hundred years of history meets state of the art, world-class, lifesaving care. We’re excited for viewers to see the extraordinary work of our teams and to share the story of a hospital that’s been at the heart of healthcare in the UK for centuries.”

We’re delighted that thousands of people across the country will have the opportunity to learn about the hospital that means so much to the Guild, and to discover the contribution that we make to the staff and patients at Barts.
